Christopher Jonathan James Nolan (born July 30, 1970) is a British American film director, screenwriter and Producer.
He received serious notice after his second feature Memento (2000), which he wrote and directed based on a story idea by his brother, Jonathan Nolan. Jonathan went to co-write later scripts with him, including the Batman series and The Prestige. He also first collaborated with Wally pfister, who would photograph all his subsequent films. After directing Insomnia (2002), Nolan pitched an idea for a reboot of the Batman film franchise to Warner Bros., eventually making a successful trilogy consisting of Batman begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Night Rises
Inception (2010) was an original screenplay by Nolan, a heist film set in the world of "shared dreaming." Nolan co-founded Syncopy films with his wife, Emma Thomas, and they have produced all his films since The prestige (2006).
Nolan has also worked with screenwriter David.S. Goyer, film editor Lee Smith, composers David Julyan and Hans Zimmer, special effects coordinator Chris Corbould, and actors Christian Bale, Cillian Murphy, Jeremy Theobald, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, and Michael Caine.
Nolan spent his childhood in the United States and England, and later studied English literature at University College, London, which he chose specifically for its film-making facilities. There he made a series of shorts in the college film society, and met the friends with whom he would later make following (1998), his independent début feature.
INCEPTION
Director Christopher Nolan says the James Bond movies had a strong influence on his new movie Inception.
The sci-fi thriller, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, had its UK premiere in London on Thursday night. It follows a team of thieves who steal secrets from other people's dreams.
"The Bond influence on the film was very intentional because, for me, growing up with the Bond films – they've always stood for grand-scale action," said Nolan, who also directed The Dark Knight and Batman Begins.
Critics have praised the film's blend of mind-bending action sequences and emotional punch. Some have hailed it as Nolan's "masterpiece".
Like the Bond films, Inception was shot in various locations around the globe including Morocco, France, Japan and Canada.
The cast includes Michael Caine, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy and Marion Cotillard.
Plot secrets
Nolan said the Bond films had always "stood for the promise of being taken to some place bigger than you could have imagined".

Christopher Nolan talks about Inception.
He added: "In dealing with the human mind and dreams, my mind naturally gravitates towards the Bond films as that sort of expression of cinematic potential.
"By the end of the film you feel that Inception could go anywhere and do anything."
Nolan kept a veil of secrecy around the plot of Inception while it was being shot last year.
"We like to keep the experience fresh for the audience, so we don't send out scripts willy-nilly. We keep things a little close to the chest," he said.
Nolan was non-committal when asked if he would now be turning his attention to a third Batman film and a new Superman project.
"I'm first going to be turning my attention to having a holiday, because I've just finished the film and I need a couple of weeks off.
"And then I'm going to figure out what's next and what we'll be doing in that direction," he said.
Inception is released in the UK on 16 July.
His influence on me
When I watched Momento for the first time, I had a very unique experience. The entire film was backwards; however, I had no trouble following its narrative. I felt like I was piecing together a puzzle, and felt like I was a part of the film and its structure. This had never happened before, and after watching the film, the name of its director was imprinted into my memory… Christopher Nolan.
Christopher Nolan is one of the most talented filmmakers working today, in terms of a visionary director who is a master at crafting a film. He has influenced me by using the same concept and idea when directing my own short films for example changing my style of film by making non-linear films.

His 1st major film Momento
A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife.
Writers: Jonathan Nolan (short story "Memento Mori"), Christopher Nolan (screenplay)
Stars: Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano
Memento is one of those pictures that will have you sitting in the theater after the lights come up so you can talk to everyone else about what they thought of the movie. This is a highly intelligent and original brain teaser that will have you guessing from beginning to end, and even afterwards. The story and the direction are the best I've seen so far in years.
The film is constructed and told in such a way that you are constantly put into the shoes of Leonard Shelby, beautifully played by Guy Pierce. Carrie-Ann Moss gives an equally mysterious and complex performance. This film is well made all the way around from the direction, to the editing, and especially the unique story that is rarely found in Hollywood these days. Four Stars!
