This 1987 co-production from Warner Bros. and Amblin entertainment is based on J. G. Ballard's autobiographical novel and was filmed at the UK's Elstree Studios as well as on location in China and Spain. Steven Spielberg directs this story of a young boy – James Graham (Christian Bale) , whose privileged upbringing is brought to a dramatic halt by the Japanese invasion of Shanghai on the 8th of December 1941. Separated from his family, he is eventually taken prisoner and sent to the Soo Chow confinement camp. Whilst suffering the hardships of the camp, Jim attempts to recreate his former life and to lift the spirits of his fellow
detainees.
