Movie Overview:

This movie may not be introduced probably to the filming world, but the elements of interest of this movie isn't short. Christian Bale is in the movie, along side with Yimou Zhang, he directed the movie Hero, one of the most famous Chinese movie ever made. Not many other cast members are famous, they may be only famous in China, but not really worldwide. Something that shock me is what Christian Bale doing in a Chinese movie, which the theme is at the time where foreigners weren't in China a lots, This movie must had interest him somehow.

Plot Overview:

A fictional story of a mortician visiting a church, and help the Nanking kids from the Japanese

Movie Review:

This movie makes me want to cry, it is a true definition for a war movie, it is very dramatic, and excellently done. The Metacritic rated very low because it is very over-emotional. I object that so much, the movie give a true look at how cruel war can be, women are being rape, and people are dying. It is so disastrous. War isn't a soft matters, It wasn't, and it won't. The movie however did get a bit too aggressive, but that is war, people die in war. Christian Bale did a fantastic job in this movie, the director was really smart casting him, he was so good at being emotional, to be honest I prefer him as the Batman better, I'm not saying that I don't like him here, I just lie him as the Batman better. The rest of the cast did a fantastic job too, great ensemble. The cinematography of this movie is fantastic, the mood that it bring is very dark and emotional. The story and the level of intensity is great, the story has clear rising, climax, and falling action. Throughout the movie, we felt sympathize with the characters in the movie, the good one of course. The movie bring you joy and tears at the same time, and a movie like that is always awesome. Despite all that, It did get a bit too long, but I still enjoyed it very much. I'm a kind of guy that can watch a long movie, it is just a trait, this movie will be boring for a lot of people.

In 1937 China, during the second Sino-Japanese war, a mortician, John (Christian Bale) arrives at a Catholic church in Nanjing to prepare a priest for burial. Upon arrival he finds himself the lone adult among a group of convent girl students and prostitutes from a nearby brothel. When he finds himself in the unwanted position of protector of both groups from the horrors of the invading Japanese army, he discovers the meaning of sacrifice and honor.

The movie is very long, but a lot of scenes really strike me. The first scene that I like is the scene where Christian Bale hold the church flag and call the Japanese soildiers to stop doing what they are doing. He look really noble and caring, not like the character whom he first appear as. I felt delighted when he do that, It didn't work but I can really see the passion in his eye. The second scene that i like is the scene where John, Yu Mo, and a soldier argue, where clearly John is drunk. He doesn't say really nice thing, but the soldier won't mind, a soldier personality right there. After a while he gone out to stop as many Japanese soldiers as possible, he throws grenade everywhere, rigged it and wait for the soldier to come close and detonate it. He dies afterward but his final blow is really awesome. The last scene I like is the ending scene, I won't spoiled it, but it is a very nice way to end a movie. I don't recommend this movie for any over-dramatic people, you will cry recklessly.

MY RATE: 9/10
