No, this doesn't have anything to do with the metal band. Legendary Pictures has just purchased a spec script called Slayer about "a man who discovers he's the last in a long line of dragonslayers." But there's a twist – the film takes place in modern times.

Variety broke the news, and they reveal that L.A. Confidential screenwriter Brian Helgeland is executive producing the script, which was written by Martin Helgeland (who I assume is Brian's brother). It looks like this is the first screenplay Martin has written, since IMDB doesn't have him credited with anything so far. But it sounds like a good fit for Legendary – they're doing Guillermo del Toro's big monster movie Pacific Rim soon – and Brian should be a great mentor, since he has written some fantastic films during his career: Mystic River, Man on Fire, Payback, and Conspiracy Theory. Let's hope some of that success runs in the family. There's no director, actor, or release date set for Slayer quite yet, but we'll keep you updated as the film moves along through development. We can only hope it's better than Reign of Fire, the dragon film starring a pre-Batman Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey.
