Last year, Clint Eastwood was preparing to direct a remake of the popular musical A Star Is Born until his star Beyonce became pregnant. With Beyonce ready to return to work as soon as June, Eastwood is currently searching for the film's male lead and he is now reportedly in talks with Tom Cruise. Seeing as how Cruise recently completed another music-driven film, Rock of Ages, this may provide a nice follow-up opportunity for him to showcase whatever musical chops he's developed. A Star Is Born tells the classic tale of an over-the-hill musician who launches the career of an ingenue as his own career fades. The project has drawn interest from top level talent in the past including Will Smith, Christian Bale, and Russell Crowe.
With Cruise's career on the upswing due to the success of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, it would be interesting to see him take some more risks. Unfortunately, outside of the musical aspect of A Star Is Born, I doubt that there's very much in the way of challenging material. Still, this is far from a done deal anyway, considering Cruise's schedule. He just started filming Oblivion and All You Need Is Kill will shoot after that, so Eastwood may need to look elsewhere for his lead. Would you want to see Tom Cruise in a Clint Eastwood-directed musical?
