Just a quick post to say how much I enjoyed
The Artist and thought it was much deserving of all the awards it received, including Best Film at the Oscars.
A lot of the time films become completely formulaic and tedious and the same actors star in films over and over. I definitely go and see films just for the actor when it's someone I like (*cough* Christian Bale *cough*) but here the actors were mostly unknown to a British audience (not so much now...). The story of The Artist was not unfamiliar, it really reminded me of the beginning of Singin' in the Rain, one of my favourite films.
Its styling and production was smooth and well thought out, the actors engaging and not over the top as they could well be without speech. At the beginning the silence was slightly unnerving and unfamiliar but the music was perfectly matched to the action and the film brought comedy and pathos together perfectly.
I also loved the 1920s setting and feel to the whole film so I've included a bit of twenties inspiration. Now I'm thoroughly looking forward to the upcoming film version of F.Scott-Fitzgerald's 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby. Baz Lurhman is directing it (he did Moulin Rouge, a classic) and Leonardo DiCaprio is starring so I have high hopes...
