Here is some cinema trivia for you, ladies and gents. Avatar and The Dark Knight are two of the highest grossing films of all time. Now, one Hollywood recipe calls for an an actor from each film to make something hot and delicious. We are talking about Batman actor, Christian Bale, and the former big blue alien herself, Ms. Zoe Saldana. The end result will be Out of the Furnace.
Variety says the upcoming picture from Relativity Media will be "gritty". Remember Crazy Heart, which starred Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal? I liked that one. Well, its script writer, Scott Cooper, is writing and directing Out of the Furnace.
It is based upon a script originally penned by Brad Ingelsby called The Low Dweller. Bale will play an ex-con who faces a decision between really savoring his newfound freedom and starting fresh versus choosing the prickly path of avenging the death of his younger brother.
I may be talking too soon, but this seems like one to watch, folks. I can anticipate a good deal of chemistry between the two stars, although a decent nemesis will also have to be chosen for Bale. This one could have a nice noir feel. Dare I even wonder about it being an Oscar contender? Okay, we will wait and see.
Saldana is circling the role of Bale's ex-wife, a waitress now married to the town sheriff. That seems rather familiar somehow. Robert Duvall, who incidentally, also appeared in Crazy Heart, may play Bale's uncle. Casey Affleck is also in talks to act the part of Bale's brother.
