Clearly I am all for life imitating art, art imitating life, art in life, and style driven in equal parts by beauty, enthusiasm and a good sense of humor.  Still, the two are not entirely interchangeable and it seems lately like some people could use a little reminding about where the line is, however faint it may be.

On Tuesday, for the London premiere of Snow White and the Huntsmen, the stars showed up decked out in full Gothic glory.  I have been waiting not so patiently for the movie to come out.  I love that kind of dark Gothic drama.  On film.  And I admire actors like Christian Bale, or even Sascha Baron Cohen, who stay in character when appearing in public while promoting a film.  But Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron's dresses weren't in character, they were simply misguided.  Somehow when Rooney Mara tries this type of thing, the whole look is so completely of a piece, and so genuine to her style, that for me it works.  But Stewart and Theron have their own looks which work for them, and this is not it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that perhaps now we can put this whole see through trend to rest.  Also, as beautiful as Kristen Stewart may be — and she is, without a doubt, quite beautiful — my god that girl has some enormous ears.  So I would also like to suggest that her stylist(s) take that into consideration next time when determining how she should wear her hair.

Meanwhile, gilt.com confused the hell out of me this week by featuring two sales based on the television show Revenge.  Generally, I think that Gilt has fairly impeccable taste in all things.  And I am a big fan of the television show.  It makes for a terrific evening's entertainment.  However, there is nothing in the show that leads me to think that I am supposed to set out to emulate the fashion and decor modeled on the show.  The characters live a lifestyle which on the surface of it appears envious.  And yet, is in fact shown to be anything but.  It is an other worldly uptight upper class Hamptons style which is perhaps beautiful, but controlled, chilling, unforgiving, and sends me running for the hills.  So what possibly made the folks at Gilt think that its customers would want to shop sales predicated on emulating the lifestyle of the characters in the show has me at a complete loss.  Some of the items are nice in and of themselves -

The Greyson Estate - Thomas Richard Collection Revenge Settss

The Greyson Estate - Vellum Carafe

The Greyson Estate - Zentique Napoleon Half Wingback Chair

but others seem to me wildly outdated and the whole set up of the sale feels like a bit of a bad joke.

The Greyson Estate - ELK Renaissance 3-Light Flush Mount

The Greyson Estate - APF Munn Elephant Handle Bottle Vase

The Greyson Estate - Vellum Clock

The Greyson Estate - Sarreid The Johnny Walker Doors

(On the whole, the selection of items from "Emily's Beach House" is a little bit better, but there are a surprising number of items which appear in both sales which makes me a little skeptical of the clarity of vision behind these sales and begin to suspect that it is perhaps just a ruse to justify putting together a bunch of merchandise left over in the warehouse.)
