The film idea my group is going with now is the serial killer idea, but now the idea has been developed so now the general plot is the killer is a detective, but he doesnt know he is the killer as he has a side to himself he doesnt know about. He doesnt know he kills people and he gets the cases of his own murders, he never solves the cases and is branded a awful detective. The opening would be him waking up and realising he is a killer becuase he looks in a mirror and sees himself covered in blood and he then has flash backs to the killing.

There are films like this idea, one of which is the film Seven, released in 1995, its about two cops trying to catch a serial killer that bases his murders around the seven deadly sins. watch?v=hYEDqNBe7d4

In this short clip from the film it clearly introduces the two main characters and gives the audience a sense of what they are like. you can tell from this that Morgan Freemans character lives alone, he has a certain routine he keeps to because he makes a coffee in the morning gets dressed then puts all the things he might need in to his pockets which he laid out the day before because they are in order. Also his behaviour towards his work is very precise and methodical because the extra that talks to him at the crime scene mentions that he looks to deeply into things at times and this annoyed his colleague so this tells us that he does this a lot.

The shots in the opening are simple with shots of the characters behaviour, like the shot of Morgan Freeman putting his equipment in his jacket in the morning. There are shots that introduce he is a deceptive with the crime scene and the dead bodies and also the feeling held by his colleagues that he is too methodical, with the shot of the other detective getting frustrated and walking out of the scene into another room as Brad Pitts character walks in.

The opening also introduces Brad Pitts character, more through dialogue than shots like with Morgan Freemans character, but you get the overall feel that the two characters are sizing each other up in the first few scenes, with the dialogue mentioning the reasons why Brad Pitts character moved there and also how he feels he is being mistreated by Morgan Freeman. The shots of the anonymous city the characters are in also gives a sense that this isn't a nice place that Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) doesn't like, with the scene raining and seeming gloomy with rough looking people around it paints a rather horrible and unpleasant environment the characters are in, this element is highlighted by the constant noise of the city which is highlighted when Somerset is trying to go to sleep.

The opening credits are creepy and are from the point of view of the murderer. They paint the image that this isn't normal and tat something is wrong. The images and small segments of footage in the titles create a creepy, messed up feel to the film.

The next film that I have analysed is the remake of the Alfred Hitchcock film american psycho. American Psycho starring Christian Bale, released in 1999. watch?v=CGeAMVK75T4

From this opening the audience gets a sense of what the character is like as they did wit the opening scene to Seven. The voice over by Christian Bale sounds emotionless and empty which adds to the idea that Patrick Bateman (Bale) is different to your normal person on the street, he has a sinister air to the character. The excessive routine the character takes shows that he takes a huge amount of care of himself, he also seems also OCD with the spotless house he has and the method in his routine he takes, where each item is applied in a certain order. The lack of emotion into his voice over and the lack of any facial expression throughout the scenes he is in adds to the creepy sinister feel he adds to each scene. the dialogue in the voice over is also very detailed and at the end of the opening the audience get a sense this character has a much darker side to himself and this element really adds to the sinister nature of the film, this would be a great element to try and recreate in my final video.
