The Ridley Scott epic feature, starring Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Rhamses, has created controversy for the largely white main cast, seemingly unreflective of Egypt at the time the film is set. To that critique, Scott has said that to raise the kind of financing needed for a film of this scale, high profile A List actors were needed to guarantee ticket sales. He stated that the financing would not have materialized if he cast “Mohammad so-and-so from such-and-such”. Those comments drew a lot of criticism, as have others Scott has made, along with Fox chief Rupert Murdoch. It remains to be seen how the controversy surrounding the film will affect opening weekend numbers.
